Haryana & Himachal Pradesh: Bonfires, kite flying, and feasting are prominent. Gifting sweets made of sesame and jaggery is common. Special Dishes served are Chikki (jaggery and peanut brittle) and Gajak.
Maharashtra: People exchange sweets made of sesame and jaggery, saying "Tilgul ghya, god god bola" (Take these sweets and speak sweetly). Special Dishes: Tilgul (sesame-jaggery sweets), Puran Poli.
Gujarat: Known for its vibrant kite festival (Uttarayan), with colorful kites filling the skies. Special Dishes: Undhiyu (a mixed vegetable dish), Jalebi.
Tamil Nadu: Celebrated as Pongal, a 4-day festival. The second day, Thai Pongal, is dedicated to worshipping the Sun. Pongal rice (a sweet dish) is cooked and offered to the Sun God. Special Dishes: Sakkarai Pongal (sweet rice), Venn Pongal (savory rice), sugarcane.

Karnataka: Houses are decorated with flowers and rangoli. Sugarcane, sesame, and jaggery dishes are prepared. Special Dishes served are Ellu Bella (a mix of sesame, jaggery, and coconut), Pongal.
West Bengal: Celebrated as Poush Sankranti, with fairs and rituals like taking a dip in the Ganga. Special Dishes served today are Patishapta (rice flour crepes with jaggery-coconut filling), Pithe (rice cake).
Odisha: Known as Makara Sankranti, devotees worship the Sun and offer rice, sugarcane, and fruits. Special Dishes served today are Makara Chaula (uncooked rice with jaggery, banana, and coconut), Khichdi.
Assam: Celebrated as Magh Bihu with feasts, bonfires, and traditional sports. Special Dishes: Pitha (rice cakes), Laru (sweet balls made of coconut or sesame).
Bihar & Uttar Pradesh: Known as Khichdi festival, people take dips in holy rivers and donate sesame and rice. Special Dishes: Khichdi (rice-lentil dish), Tilkut (sesame sweet).
