The Pandharpur Wari is one of India's oldest and largest annual foot pilgrimages, with a tradition spanning more than 800 years. Every year, lakhs of Warkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal) walk from pilgrimage centers such as Dehu (associated with Sant Tukaram) and Alandi (associated with Sant Dnyaneshwar) to the sacred town of Pandharpur, chanting devotional hymns, singing abhangs, and carrying the padukas (sacred sandals) of the saints in beautifully decorated Palkhis. The Wari traditionally begins in the Jyeshtha month (around 20–22 days before Ashadhi Ekadashi) and culminates on Ashadhi Ekadashi (Devshayani Ekadashi), when millions gather at the Shri Vitthal-Rukmini Temple for the auspicious darshan of Lord Vitthal and Goddess Rukmini. Ashadhi Ekadashi also marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four sacred months during which Lord Vishnu is believed to enter Yoga Nidra (divine cosmic sleep).
